Toshinobu Kawai, Ph.D., OLY
Accociate Professor in Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan
Greetings, I'm an Associate Professor at the University of Tsukuba in Ibaraki, Japan, where I specialize in coaching science and the development of elite athletes.
My academic work focuses on long-term athlete development in competitive sports and performance analysis—particularly in the context of short track speed skating. I strive to bridge cutting-edge sports science with real-world coaching practice.
In addition to my university role, I serve as the High Performance Director for short track at the Japan Skating Federation. In this capacity, I lead national strategies to enhance international competitiveness and support the holistic development of skaters.
Before moving into coaching and research, I represented Japan at the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Winter Games, earning a bronze medal in short track speed skating in 1992. I'm also a former two-time world champion in 1985 and 1987, and those experiences continue to shape my approach to athlete development and leadership.
At the core of my career is a strong commitment to integrating science, practice, and mentorship to empower the next generation of high-performance athletes and coaches.
