Toyin Coker

Toyin Coker is a young passionate woman of colour with a strong social consciousness strongly linked to her Nigerian and Jamaican backgrounds. As a disciplined curator and humanitarian Toyin provides eyewitness testimony with her skills in journalism and performance-based art to the struggle for those pushing back against oppressive forces. Born in the United States on a February morning in 1983, Toyin then came to Canada after her battle with cancer. Healthy and happily immersed in her ongoing observational study, she trained in theatre where her years of quiet contemplation proved to be the formula for a talented comedian, creative performer and dancer, solidifying her acceptance to a Regional Arts academy in Caledon, Ontario. Extensive traveling to Africa, California, New York,Oakland,London, Jamaica and in between only made her self-study that much faster, dissecting her own movements with a trained mind. Atoning her life experiences and education to recognize and utilize the truths acquired through her journeys, Toyin has through her work learned to carefully identified the fundamental needs of her community and is committed to its fortification. With a natural ability to guide and recognize positive power in others, through energy building not blocking and from positive re-enforcement, Toyin can passionately continue to provide a fundamental link for the communities of colour.
