Susan was born in Salt City, Utah. In the early 1970s, he moved with her family to Kentucky when she was 12 years old, settling in Lexington, Kentucky.
In her teenage years, Susan helped support her family by working a number of service jobs, including at a McDonald's. Susan attended University of Kentucky, where she majored in computer science.
After graduating from university, Susan was selected for an internship in Tokyo working for a subcontractor of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, developing software for matching trade orders. She also worked as a research analysts for the Australia Stock Exchange.
