Transgas Development Systems

TransGas Energy Systems LLC, a project of TransGas Development Systems, aims to develop a clean and safe natural gas cogeneration facility in an industrial neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. When TransGas Energy Systems receives approval for construction, the plant will provide approximately 1,100 megawatts of electricity to New York City, as well as 2 million pounds per hour of steam, used by Manhattan skyscrapers for heating.

The proposed site for TransGas Energy Systems is on the bank of the East River, at One North 12th Street in Brooklyn. An industrial site for more than 100 years, the land will remain unusable without significant reclamation efforts, which TransGas Development Systems has committed to undertake. The construction of TransGas Energy Systems' cogeneration plant will make much of this area available for civic use through conversion into a waterfront park.

Once built, the TransGas Energy Systems plant will meet approximately 10 percent of New York City's peak energy requirements and will do so much more efficiently and cleanly than existing plants. Power plants currently in operation in the New York City area average below 40 percent efficiency. The TransGas Energy Systems facility will boast almost 55 percent efficiency, taking advantage of combined cycle technology that involves the use of two turbines. A gas turbine generates the plant's baseload, and excess heat from that generator powers a steam turbine.

As an independent electricity generation company, TransGas Energy Systems shoulders all risks and responsibilities for the proposed plant, and the company has gone beyond the call of duty to create a design that emphasizes safety, environmental protection, and efficiency. The current model for TransGas Energy Systems' plant features an underground facility covered by solar panels and a park area. It employs reclaimed water for its steam generation processes and does not draw water from the Hudson or East Rivers for cooling, protecting aquatic habitats.
