I create new online communication technologies for helping groups achieve shared understanding. Email and web forums are easy to speak into, but hard to listen through, often leading to cascading misunderstandings and personal attacks. My secret power is designing new web interfaces that help participants actively listen, which can in turn help build shared understanding even when hundreds are involved.
Most of my effort in the past decade has been Consider.it, an open source technology and business for helping large groups find common ground and make decisions, used by, for example, the City of Seattle, City of Denver, Mozilla Foundation, and others.
In the past, I created Reflect for fostering listening in online discussion, researched how Wikipedians work together, led the technical effort at Flash Volunteer, and contributed to the development of UrbanSim.
To me there's nothing better than working on ideas from conception to implementation to evaluation and back again!
I'm an ex-institutional academic. You can see some of my peer reviewed research.
I blog about Consider.it, regeneration, and parenting at https://traviskriplean.com.
