In ancient times, 'Tryambak' was the tapobhoomi of Gautam Rishi.
In order to get rid of the sin of cow-slaughter on him, Gautam sage did severe penance and asked Shiva for a boon to incarnate the Ganges here.
As a result, the Ganges of the south i.e. Godavari river originated.
Due to the presence of the three-eyed Shiva Shambhu, this place came to be called Trimbakeshwar.

Trimbak Jyotirlinga is situated about 30 kms west of Nashik city in Maharashtra, it is also called Trimbakeshwar Shiva temple.
This place is also known for the origin of Godavari River which is the longest river in India.

Here the Godavari river originates from a mountain named Brahmagiri nearby.
Just as the holy river Ganga, which flows in North India, has a special spiritual significance, similarly this holy river Godavari, which flows in the south, has a special significance.
Bhagirathi is the result of the penance of King Bhagirath, whereas Godavari is the result of the penance of Rishi Gautam.

It was only on the request of Rishi Gautam and the holy river Godavari that Lord Shiva gave his approval for his abode at this place.
The same Lord Shiva became famous in this world by the name 'Trimbakeshwar'.
Direct darshan of Jyotirlinga located here was prohibited for women and Harijans, they only see the crown of God.
This restriction has been lifted since last few days.

In this Jyotirlinga, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh are all seated, this is its biggest feature.
Otherwise all the Jyotirlingas are enshrined only by Lord Shiva.

On Shivaratri and Sawan Monday, the Trimbakeshwar temple is thronged by devotees. Devotees take a bath in the morning and have darshan of their idol.
Narayan Nagbali is worshiped at this place for the prevention of Pitradosh.

This place is world-famous for the description of 'Kaal Sarp Dosh'.
At this place, a person's ancestors are pleased with the Shradh rituals performed for the ancestors and liberates them from Pitru Dosh.
