Trip Jennings

Rio Rancho, NM

I worked at newspapers across the country before helping to start New Mexico's first online newspaper -- New Mexico Independent (NMI) -- in 2008. NMI shut down after a few years, but not before winning several awards and becoming the most influential political site in New Mexico.

New Mexico In Depth Inc. (NMID), a nonprofit start up journalistic outfit. is my latest endeavor as I try to surf the wave transforming the media industry. I'm Executive Director. On occasion, I also write for the New York Times.

My deputy director and I started NMID in 2012 because there's nothing quite like uncovering facts that can lead to changes in our small corner of the world.

As for me personally, I guess I'd say I'm curious -- curious about the world and how it works, curious how we know what we know and curious why, despite all the horror, tragedy and randomness that mucks up our finite lives, I am still able to find meaning in the ordinary things of everyday living and am hopeful that it all works out in the end. Call it faith. Faith in what? I'm still working that out. My curiosity means that I listen for but don't always know the answers, which makes me wary of extremes -- extreme left, extreme right, extreme secularism, extreme religion -- and anyone bearing only answers.

Things I like to do: hanging with the family, reading widely (literature, history, philosophy, ethics, science fiction), listening to copious amounts of music and engaging in wide-ranging, preferably philosophical, conversations. I love to travel too.

Little known facts about me: I earned a Master’s of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga., and, in the early 1980s, I used to break-dance. Don’t ask me to show off any moves, though. My glory days are long past.
