Current college student working on an associates degree in accounting. Prior to my re-enrollment in school, I worked extensively in retail with a long customer service history. Despite the highlights, I never felt like it was taking me in the direction of where I wanted to be in life. I did find the social interactions with a variety of people very interesting. The opportunities to make more of it just didn’t seem to present themselves despite my hard work. So I decided to go back to school.
Last year I made the Dean’s List and completed certificate programs in basic and computerized accounting. I plan to start working in my field of study but, I have limited experience. Since spring semester 2013 I have been out of school, but I kept myself occupied by starting an online webstore and keeping the financial books. I kept books for it just to remain in the habit of doing accounting work, and I am very familiar with QuickBooks. I’m very good with spreadsheets, document formatting, and data entry, and I will be resuming studies in August hopefully. I have closed the store down recently to focus on returning fully to work.
I am attending school primarily to learn the facets of running a business- from making managerial decisions, to financial planning and bookkeeping, to human resources, and labor relations. I want to be able to understand why businesses make the choices they make, and apply that logic in the workplace and also in my personal life.
I have also been considering pursuing another degree in human resources at another school. However, I have also been mulling over studying public relations. It seems like the contact opportunities for business through social media are on the upward slope- especially over the last few years. Since I have been using them for so long, there could be a lot of possibilities in that also.
Outside of school, my interests are sports. I watch automobile and motorcycle races. I am a huge basketball fan- especially of college basketball, and the March Madness Tournament just might be my favorite time of year. I also watch football, and I follow cycling. I also ride from early May up until the end of September. I am a member of the Active Transportation Alliance, and I have participated in the Bike the Drive event on Memorial Day weekend for the last two years.
