I earned a Ph.D. in psychology from Michigan in 1971 and managed a research project in the psychology of aging for two and a half years at Harvard Med School. I joined IBM Research in '73; conducted research in query languages, natural language processing, design problem solving, audio systems, and speech synthesis. In 1986, I began & directed the AI Lab at NYNEX Science and Technology. The lab did work in expert systems, speech recognition, machine vision, robotics, and intelligent tutoring systems. I rejoined IBM in 1998 to work in knowledge management and Human-Computer Interaction including Pattern Languages; the business uses of stories and storytelling; e-learning; HCI & International Development; tools for parallel programming; and most recently software governance). I have over 200 publications and invited presentations in Human-Computer Interaction. I've been active in ACM’s special interest group in Computer Human Interaction since its inception at the Gaithersburg conference and served for six years on the SIGCHI Executive Committee.
