“What do you want to be when you grow up?” The most elementary question that is continuously being asked in grade school. From kindergarten all through middle school, my answer without hesitation would have been to be a designer. It seemed fitting as I loved all things trendy, and I was always interested in fashion. However, with new experiences, my passion quickly shifted into a completely different field. My first mission trip to Lighthouse Family Retreat revealed to me what my true passions were and what I should commit my future to. It was a week full of kids and their parents experiencing joy, rest, restoration, and hope despite their diagnosis. These families who were filled with laughter and smiles were fighting the dirty battle of childhood cancer. The joy displayed throughout this week changed my perspective on life and made me see where I wanted to invest my time. The kids I have met who are dealing with some of the hardest days never fail to smile and show appreciation for everyday life. I knew whatever I did with my life it had to be with pediatric patients. The occupation of being a Child-Life Specialist fit my new passion better than a designer ever could. I could be able to work hands-on with those precious kids and be reminded of how great life is. If it wasn’t for being pushed past my comfort zone and accepting the invitation to that mission trip, I might have never discovered my biggest passion. The best parts of life are waiting outside of our comfort zone.
