Hello, my name is Tyler Fischer. I am a 3rd year biochemical engineering student at UGA. My biggest involvement at UGA is my research. I work in Dr. Yan’s biochemical engineering lab under his top PhD student, Yaping Yang. Right now, our focus is geared towards increasing the product yield of a protein that we genetically engineered and cloned into a culture of E. coli. My favorite part of the week is when I go in to help with research. It is an immense amount of accomplishment when we undergo an experiment and we receive favorable results. Since I have shown a high amount of dedication, and have contributed greatly to the research, I am close to achieving co-authorship on the paper. Even though I have an exorbitant amount of fun trying to create things, there are some down sides to being as involved in the research as I am. It is a huge time commitment. Sometimes, I have to undergo a 48-hour data collection for a fermentation we conduct. I have to spend the entire weekend in the lab (or sometimes week days) and collect data for 2-3 hours at a time, and spend my other 1-2 hours trying to rest on a sofa in the lab. Overall though, I thoroughly enjoy doing research under Dr. Yan and am grateful for the opportunity he has presented me.
