Uğur Sofu

Uğur Sofu (born June 2, 1987) is a German-Turkish musician, screenwriter, and film producer. He is the founder of Sofumedia Film Production and has received multiple national and international awards for his work in music and film. His short film Kota and screenplay for Uğur’lu Anne have been recognized by cultural institutions, including the Hessen Film Institute.[1] Sofu is also the president of Cinema und Kultur Brücke e.V., an organization dedicated to promoting the stories of migrants and individuals with disabilities through the arts.
Early Life and Education
Uğur Sofu was born in Darmstadt, Germany, to a Malatian migrant family.[2] He completed his primary and secondary education in Ober-Ramstadt. At the age of four, he was introduced to folk music and began learning the traditional Anatolian instrument, the bağlama. By the age of ten, he was taking bağlama and vocal lessons.
Career
Music
In 2006, Sofu co-founded the group Hazal, performing at weddings and concerts. In 2012, the group produced their first professional music video, a reinterpretation of Zorda Şimdi by Aşık Ali Nurşani.[3] He launched his solo career in 2020, releasing eight singles and producing seven music videos. His most recent release is Benden Olsun.

Film
Sofu wrote the screenplay for Uğur’lu Anne, which was supported by the Hessen Film Institute, affiliated with the German Ministry of Culture and Arts.[4] His short film Kota received multiple national and international awards. In 2023, his film Be the Last won an Honorable Award at the SWIFF Festival Awards.[5]

Sofu is the founder of Sofumedia Film Production and serves as the president of Cinema und Kultur Brücke e.V. The organization focuses on promoting the stories of migrants and people with disabilities through film and other artistic mediums.[6] His work emphasizes social awareness and representation of underrepresented communities.
Personal Life
Sofu is married and has one child.
