Project Manager in Nigeria
Umasoye (Franca) Igwe is a language activist, project manager, and communications professional dedicated to the revitalization of Indigenous languages and the promotion of digital equality.
She is the Founder and Executive Director of Speak Ekpeye Fluently Language Initiative (SEFLI), where she pioneered the first digital learning resource for the Ekpeye language, providing access to thousands of speakers and fostering cultural reconnection.
Under her leadership, SEFLI has collaborated with schools, reaching hundreds of students annually, and secured grant funding to expand both digital and print learning resources.
Umasoye serves as Rapporteur for the UNESCO Ad-hoc Group for Digital Equality and Domains under the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL 2022–2032), where she contributes strategic reports that inform global policy and advocacy for Indigenous language sustainability.
She has also coordinated international projects with institutions such as the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, developing collaborative forums that connected over 240 participants representing 182 languages across 44 countries.
Her professional experience spans communications, marketing, localization, and project management. At the intersection of technology and culture, she has led strategies that strengthened brand visibility, enhanced cross-border engagement, and amplified marginalized voices in digital spaces.
Recognized for her impact, Umasoye is a recipient of the WSIS 2022 Hackathon Award for ICTs for Indigenous Languages, the Gesellschaft für bedrohte Sprachen (GBS) grant, and the Trailblazer in Indigenous Language Education Award by Nigeria Magazine Networking Awards (2025).
A sought-after speaker, she has presented at global forums including UNESCO’s Global Media and Information Literacy Week, the Global Voices Summit, the HIGA Summit, and the Linguists Collective Conference, amongst others. Through her work, she continues to bridge technology, advocacy, and culture to advance Indigenous language revitalization and digital inclusion worldwide.
