About Me
Can dogs get sand fleas? Beach sand fleas are often confused with midges or fleas that bite the nose. Yes, your puppy can get sand fleas just like any other flea problem. Sand fleas are present in many parts of the United States. They are especially evident in native areas such as beaches, marshes, swamps, and any other wet areas with large bodies of water. Sand fleas will easily get into your dog. They are burrowing for fleas, which means they dig deep into your dog's skin. They will then suck the dog's blood. Note that sand fleas can also infect humans, so they're not limited to canines. For beach walkers or people who live next to the beach, sand fleas can become a real pest. How do you know if your dog has sand fleas? It's pretty easy to say. Sand fleas are very small and small (almost). After a day with your dog, the fleas will attach to your dog's paws and start looking for places to feed. They are transparent and hard to see. But you can tell your dog can get sand fleas if he is constantly scratching, biting, or licking himself. Fleas cause itching and discomfort when they bite and feed on your dog's blood. They dig through the skin and it will drive your dog crazy.
Here are the most common signs of sand fleas on your dog:
Constantly scratching, biting or licking the fur
Small black fleas visible on the body
Can bark or bark when bitten
Rash or small bump on the skin
Possible high temperature (fever)
Can sand fleas come home to you? Sand fleas can accompany you, but likely won't survive for long in your home. They eventually die because they lack the environment, food and water to survive in your home. But this does not mean that the pain caused by them and the itch goes away. When you meet them at the beach and they bite you or your dog, that's all they need to make the next week of your life go awry. So even though they can't get into your home, they can still burn you at the beach. And leave you a "gift" for the next week or two.
