Aside from zinc, there are other anodes that may be used to protect metal components on a yacht against galvanic corrosion. Aluminum anodes are growing increasingly popular and will soon overtake zinc anodes. Because of the anode's alloy, these aluminum anodes even safeguard aluminum hardware. The only reason caterpillar pencils are not more common than zinc anodes is that they are more expensive and provide no real benefit to the boat owner.
