A lawful permanent resident of the USA (Legal Permanent Resident) is a person who is not a U.S. citizen, but have immigration visa or are in the process of change of status and citizenship. The status of a lawful permanent resident is confirmed by a green card which is permanent residence permit and work in the United States.

Non-immigrants are citizens of other countries who are allowed to enter the United States for a limited period of time based on temporary (nonimmigrant) visas. To to non-immigrants include students, tourists, seasonal workers, businessmen, executives and diplomats.

Persons in the United States on temporary (nonimmigrant) visas have a limited amount of rights compared to citizens and legal permanent residents of the United States. The scope of the rights possessed by a person temporarily residing in the U.S. depends on the category of visa issued.
