Václav Velčovský

Václav Velčovský works where public policy meets research.

Between 2015 and 2026 he designed and ran the way the Czech Republic used EU funds to transform its education and research system. As Deputy Minister of Education he was accountable for €7.5 billion in EU funding and for EU and international affairs. He carried the education and research agenda through the Czech Presidency of the EU Council in 2022, and after the Russian invasion of Ukraine he built the Czech response for war-affected students, researchers and institutions. He left the civil service in April 2026 and now advises independently.

He holds a Ph.D. in Pedagogy from Charles University and writes on Czech-German relations, language and education policy, and good governance.
