I am a human movement scientist and epidemiologist, and employed as an associate professor at the Department of Public and Occupational Health of the VU University Medical Center and the EMGO Institute in Amsterdam. I chair the department's research theme 'Sports, Lifestyle and Health' in which my own main research topics are (1) Prevention of sports and physcial activity related injuries (including cost-effectiveness and implementation issues); and (2) Physical activity promotion integrated in everyday life. Within the department I supervise several (inter-)national PhD projects. I have (co) authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications.

I chair the Research Council Sport, Physical Activity & Health (LOSO). The mission of LOSO is to stimulate high quality scientific research on sport, physical activity & health with the accent on prevention, medical care and performance. LOSO especially wants to facilitate the distribution of the generated knowledge.

Further, I am an associate editor of The Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, senior associate editor of the British Journal of Sports Medicine, and member of the editorial board of the Journal of Athletic Training.
