VetsWork Long Island Cares
The Long Island Cares VetsWork Program has been fully operational since June 2014. VetsWork assists veterans in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, providing assistance with re-entry into the job market (resumes, interview skills, dress, etc.) as well as connections to other assistance needed to help them become job-ready.Veterans come to the program through our weekly Military Appreciation Tuesdays, as well as through job fairs and stand downs. Our growing network of employers and service providers work with us to provide interviews and assist veterans by addressing housing, transportation and medical issues.
Specifically, for veterans, we offer the following:
* Military Appreciation Tuesdays: Hosted each week at Long Island Cares’ pantries located in Huntington Station, Lindenhurst, and Freeport, veterans and their families are able to access food, personal care items, household products, pet food, and school supplies. All veterans are provided with information and resources pertaining to veteran-specific benefits.
* Mobile Pantry: Delivers nutritious groceries to homebound, disabled veterans unable to access their local pantries.
* Job Development: Assistance that can help veterans build job skills (i.e. cover letter and resumé writing), aid in their job search process, and facilitate real workplace experience through various volunteer opportunities.
* Community Outreach Initiatives: Collaborating with the Nassau and Suffolk County Veterans Service Agencies and the Northport VA Hospital, we support events such as Veteran Stand Downs which provide vital health and social services to veterans of all ages and circumstance. Our services are made available to various community organizations providing counseling, homeless outreach, and emergency assistance to veterans in need.
