Atala Mosque, Jaunpur

Atala Masjid was built in 1408 A.D.by the ruler of Sharqi, Ibrahim Shah Sharqi, located in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh. After demolishing the Atala Devi temple which was built by Vijaychandara, who belonged to Gahadavala, this temple was converted into a mosque by Ibrahim Shah Sharqi.

Atala Mosque has imposing gates surrounded by its artistic walls and its height is more than 100 Feet. The area of this mosque is nearly 248 square feet. The main dome is supported by squinches to carry the weight. Owing to the height of the door, this mosque is not visible from the outside. The architecture of this mosque is quite distinctive. One of the most amazing features of this dome is its stone mihrab niche which is enabled with a ribbed semi-dome and flanked by the stone minbar. The ceiling of the roof is supported by beams with brackets. It is true that the entire mosque is enabled with three domes to offer prayer. This feature is very similar to Tughlaqs architecture.

Within the premises of this Mosque, there is a madrasa, known as Din Dunia where Islamic education is imparted to students. This monument is preserved by the Archeological Survey of India (A.S.I). It has been a great place for history lovers and architecture buffs because its architecture is so appealing and attracts a good number of tourists every year like Taj Mahal Agra. If you happen to be there, do not miss an opportunity to see this mosque.

After visiting Jaunpur Mosque, one can opt for a sunrise taj mahal tour by car that was built in honor of his beloved wife Mumtaj, whose real name is Arjumand Banu Begum died while giving the birth of the 14th child; therefore, this monument has two tombs of king and queen.
