Jews in Italy have a history spanning more than 2,000 years, making their community one of the oldest in Europe. Jewish life began during the Roman era, especially in Rome, where a continuous Jewish presence has existed since ancient times. Over the centuries, vibrant communities developed in cities such as Venice, Florence, and Milan, contributing to commerce, scholarship, and cultural life. Although they faced periods of restriction, including the establishment of ghettos and persecution during the rule of Benito Mussolini in World War II, the community preserved its traditions and heritage. Today, Jews in Italy continue to maintain historic synagogues, cultural institutions, and religious practices while actively participating in modern Italian society.
