Vladimir Molchanov
Bioinformatician and Biotechnologist in Saint Petersburg, Russia
I am a third-year student at Saint Petersburg Chemical Pharmaceutical Academy with a specialization in Biotechnology. At the same time I also study Bioinformatics at Saint Petersburg Bioinformatics Institute as a second higher education. My average grade is 4.9 with a maximum of 5.0.
My experience in bioinformatics started in December 2016 when I applied for an educational course "Introduction to Bioinformatics". At that moment I was doing a research project in genetics based on cytogenetic analysis of eukaryotic chromosomal DNA so I was especially interested in application of bioinformatic approaches in genomic researches. I was so impressed by the opportunities bioinformatics provides to biologists that I decided to proceed my scientific career in genomics and applied for position of a researcher at Saint Petersburg Center for Genomic Bioinformatics.
At the moment I am a part of the research team working on the project devoted to the Whole-genome sequencing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This project is aimed at the detection of the new genetic markers associated with tuberculosis clinical manifestations.
To improve my knowledge and skills in March 2017 I applied for an educational program at Bioinformatics Institute and was accepted to study in 2017/2018. At the moment I am studying molecular phylogeny, statistics, programming with Python 3, data analysis with R, discrete math and carrying out a scientific project devoted to the development of a program that provides a biologist an opportunity to detect SNPs and InDels mutations in big genomic data and check if an investigated bacterial strain is resistant to certain antibiotic which will significantly improve antibiotical therapy.
In general, my main ambition in science is to combine wet lab (in vitro) and dry lab (in silico) skills to improve and develop modern approaches in biological research techniques.
