Vancouver Island PWA Society
Vancouver Island PWA Society is the ONLY peer based HIV/AIDS organization on Vancouver Island. We are a non-profit, member based organization made up of HIV+ and HepC co-infected people. A volunteer Board of Directors, all of whom are living with HIV/AIDS, governs our Society. This is to ensure the stability of our grassroots philosophy of ‘By PWA’s for PWA’s’, in keeping with our person supporting model of service.
Peer Support at Vancouver Island PWA Society
Our most accessed service is the Peer Support Program. Peer Supporters are people living with HIV who go through a comprehensive training program. They are here to listen to your problems, answer your questions and provide appropriate referrals, if necessary.
Peer support is offered either on a one to one basis or in small group sessions. Our trained Peer Supporters can meet with you either in the office privately by drop in, special appointment or off site over coffee or tea.
Peer supporters are not crisis counsellors or mental health workers but we are here to listen to you, help you in any way we can to find solutions or peace of mind.
If you think you are need of of more extensive counseling than we can provide, we will help refer you to the resources to meet your needs.
