My name is Wyatt Ferrelle and I am type 1 diabetic. I was diagnosed right before the age of six during kindergarten. Growing up with diabetes definitely had its highs and lows, but it has made me who I am today. Diabetes has never limited me and it never will. I still get to enjoy everything exactly how I would even if I were to have never been diagnosed with diabetes. While diabetes doesn't limit me to anything, it does give me more responsibilities that other kids don't have. Checking my blood sugar happens to be one of the responsibilities that is the most important. This frustrating task allows me to decide if I need insulin or carbohydrates. In my early years of being diagnosed, I used insulin shots. Now, I use an insulin pump. This insulin pump makes it much simpler for me to snack and maintain my blood sugar. In fact, it took some of the people I grew up with a couple of years to even realize I am diabetic. Diabetes has never confined me, but I tend to keep it to myself and not let others worry about it. A year ago, planning to head off to college, my doctor gave me a proposal that I get a medical alert of some sort to indicate to others that I am diabetic. In the past, I have worn a bracelet occasionally, but I have never liked them. During my appointment, she threw out the idea of a medical alert tattoo. I jumped at the opportunity and designed the medical alert that is currently on my wrist. Diabetes is something I can live with, but is very serious. Hopefully in the future there will be a cure for diabetes and I can look at my wrist as a memory.
