Walter Lapeyre
Amount of perspiration endured is directly correlated to time spent on stage. As I looked out at the dimly lit faces gathered for Isidore Newman’s Film Fest 2015, only those belonging to the film festival’s judges appeared. “I wish I had more time to film scene two. If only I had a better lead actor,” I thought to myself as I swept through the processes involved in making my film, “Compensation”. Locating my father’s face in the crowd brought on an epiphany: satisfaction only comes with accepting the final cut.
I am Walter Lapeyre. Student, son, and filmmaker. My inability to make my father proud through sport, his passion, hindered his acceptance in my eyes throughout adolescence. As I located his face in that audience, I realized I was wrong. There is no need to dwell in the past and wish for what could have been. Passion recognizes passion, and satisfaction comes with acceptance. The intangible award of being satisfied with my relationship with my father was already won. “And this year’s winner in the category of best film goes to Compensation!” Well, I guess tangible awards are cool too.
