Ward Bros. Plant Hire Ltd. Was formed in 1964 when the Ward family expanded their successful farming business by purchasing a local Weardale haulage company. As the company expanded, the hire fleet was tailored to meet the changing requirements of bulk earthmoving in the civil engineering industry, particularly those of the contract crushing, screen gin and opencast coal mining services.
By implementing a rigid service schedule the company was able to achieve a very high machine availability, a plant and maintenance record that has been the basis of continued and structured expansion.
Today the company owns and operates one of the most modern and varied plant hire fleets in the country. The plant hire business is operated from the company’s headquarters on the outskirts of Durham. The workshops are comprehensively equipped allowing most refurbishment and repairs to be carried out in-house. The hire fleet also provides the onsite back up with a range of mobile service vehicles to ensure the maximum availability and customer service.
With the expansion of the plant hire fleet in the early 1970s, Ward Bros began utilizing the equipment themselves in the bulk earthmoving field. By applying the same rigid maintenance and servicing schedules that had worked so well in the pant hire business, Ward Bros. were quickly able to demonstrate their competence and reliability in the Civil Engineering and Contract Crushing business. Several large contracts were delivered, working as main contractors on British Coal opencast coal sites. The diversity of machinery available from the plant hire fleet enables the contracting division to tackle any job, and to compete with larger national and international companies.
