As a former professional athlete and current NFL limited partner owner of the Atlanta Falcons (#RISEUP), I learned about being a good example when I played for Coach Tony Dungy in Tampa. My mother, Betty Smothers, a Baton Rouge Police Officer was killed during a robbery attempt while on an off duty security assignment.
As an 18 year-old, I became the legal guardian of my five younger siblings. Entering the National Football League was a gift for me and meant a better life for us. I was challenged during my rookie year by Coach Dungy to be part of the solution and it felt right because that is also the way my mother wanted me to live.
My Homes for the Holidays program started 20 years ago when I was a rookie for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Glazer Family and team officials helped me develop and launch my vision.
Today, over 150 adults and over 400 children have benefitted and volunteers have stepped up to serve our communities along with me. So today, I am challenging you! Together, we can show strength in the face of adversity and we can use thelessons that I learned in the NFL to create stronger communities by assisting families who need a hand up.
The #28challenge asks you to make a $28 donation to provide better futures for families and children across the nation through my Charities. We CAN change the world but we have to act. And we have to share the power of pulling together.
Thank you, Warrick Dunn #28
