Inducted in the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) on March 29, 2012. Grandfather x5 removed was Hezekiah Goff first a Connecticut Marine who served aboard the CT warship Oliver Chromwell when she sunk the HMS Admiral Kepple, later a rifleman in a Mass infantry unit. He moved to Richford Vermont and also served in the War of 1812. He had two wives and 18 children - living to the age of 93. The DAR placed a plaque next to his grave declaring him a hero of the American revolution. His daughter; Sophie married Jonathan Delano Smith making me a 6th cousin to Franklin Delano Roosevelt (I so wish it was Teddy!!!) A small portion of the border with Canada was decided by a wrestling match which Jonathan won on behalf of the citizens of Richford - or so the story goes.Jonathan's son Alfred Gunn ("Gummie") Smith left Vermont after the Civil War and became a sucessful tree farmer in Clay Center, Kansas. He then look the Oregon Trail to Washington. Along the way two of his daughters got to know two of the Tracy boys along the trail whom they married. He is burried in Moscow, ID not six miles from where my Grandfather Scott Devere Tracy was burried in Potlatch Idaho in 1917.I'm an active member of the Monticello Chapter of the Kansas SAR.Down the road a mile or two is the site of Monticello Township whereWilliam Butler ("Wild Bill") Hickcock first sheriffed.
