Lawrence Welk, a well-known bandleader and television impresario, left a legacy of music, entertainment, and timeshares, also known as vacation ownerships. The timeshares resulted from a drive he took through the countryside north of San Diego, California, in 1964. Intending to buy an orange grove, he purchased a motel and golf course instead. Over the years, that property expanded to include more golf courses, a theatre, and vacation ownership. Today, Welk Resort Group operates three Interval International timeshare properties, two in California and one in Mexico. In addition, Welk Resort Group owns Welk Resorts Branson and the accompanying theatre. Evolving from Lawrence Welk’s original purchase, Welk Resorts San Diego includes 3 vacation ownership resorts: the Mountain and Lawrence Welk Villas and Villas on the Greens, totaling more than 500 units in all. Welk Desert Oasis Resort, located near Palm Springs, California, remains one of Welk Resort Group’s premier vacation-ownership sites. The luxury one-bedroom villas provide beautiful views of the desert and San Jacinto Mountains. Situated near this Welk Resort Group complex, Cathedral Canyon Golf and Tennis Club offers scenic golf and tennis, as well as swimming, aqua classes, and arts-and-crafts lessons. The newest vacation ownership resort of Welk Resort Group, Sirena Del Mar, sits on the cliffs above Cabo San Lucas peninsula in Mexico.
