Weng Kung is a Research Group Leader and Principal Investigator (2017) at International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL). His research group interest focuses on developing and translating technological innovations (e.g., nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance, Raman spectroscopic) for the next generation of molecular phenotyping in health and disease. Prior to joining INL, he was Junior Investigator at BioSyM-SMART, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (2009-2013) and subsequently promoted to the role Research Scientist (2014-2015), and thereafter held the position Senior Research Scientist at Institute of Health Technologies, Singapore (2015-2017). BioSyM-SMART Centre is the first research institution established outside Boston, under the joint venture between MIT and National Research Foundation of Singapore.

Weng Kung holds several key patents and first/senior authored several seminal papers appeared in Nature Medicine, Nature Molecular Phenomics (under reviewed), Nature Scientific Reports, Review of Scientific Instrumentation, Advanced Healthcare Materials, Lab-on-Chip and attracted worldwide press coverages (e.g., The Guardian, The Strait Times, Asian Scientist Magazine, and Nature). Weng Kung is the recipient of several internationally competitive awards/grants such as Japan Ministry of Science and Technology Scholar, MIT Postdoctoral Fellowship, MIT Technology Ignition, and more recently the China Top 1000 Youth Talents. In 2014, Weng Kung was listed as one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers 2014, in recognition of his team disruptive technology. Honourees include a range of leaders, advocates, innovators, and visionaries from around the world, such as Jennifer Doudna (CRISPR), Elizabeth Holmes (Theranos), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), and Jack Ma (Alibaba.com).
