Whittney Bacon-Griffith
Johnson City, Tennessee
Hello world! My name is Whittney. I am 28 years old. I am attending East Tennessee State University. My major is Mass Communications with a concentration in Public Relations and a minor in Marketing.
Growing up, I was a poster child for cystic fibrosis. I was diagnosed at six weeks old, January 28, 1986, 45 minutes after the Challenger blew up. So while the world experienced a tragic loss, my family was trying to figure out their next steps in life with me. As a child, I lived a normal life, well, to me normal life consisted of breathing treatments, therapies, medicines, doctor visits, and on occasion a hospital stay.
I stayed active participating in sports, ranging from basketball, softball, volleyball, cheerleading, dance, and gymnastics. At the age of 11, I was also diagnosed with juvenile type one diabetes. In some cases with cf, people develop diabetes. Just as with the cf, I just had to factor checking sugars and insulin shots into my everyday life.
I am a very fortunate woman. Knowing the risks of my illnesses and the severity of them, all I could do was live my life and chose what was important to me. Receiving my education has become my biggest desire. I changed my major several times, when finally, two years ago, found the major I am in and love everything about it.
I was just married on January 5, 2013. Life has been so good to me, that now more than ever, my desire to succeed is my ultimate focus. I have learned life just has a way of working out when you stop searching, and begin to live it.
I hope to update this about me section as time goes on with more successful stories of where life will be taking me. So stay tuned!
