“The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.” Carl Jung I grew up in Appalachia where I learned to farm, hunt and fish from my grandfather and step-father. While in High School, in Waverly, Ohio, I received various local and national awards for my art work and poetry. During the Vietnam War I worked in alternative service to the military as a civilian medical technician taking care of burn and facial cancer patients at The Ohio State University Hospitals. After two years of public service I traveled to Europe, hitchhiking and hiking throughout Western Europe. Upon returning to the US I re-enrolled at The Ohio State University where I completed undergraduate majors in History of Art, Secondary English Education, with minors in Comparative Literature and Behavioral Sciences (Psychology, Communications and Anthropology) and received a B.A. in History of Art and a B.S. Ed. During this time I worked in emergency services at local hospitals and was trained as a Phlebotomist. It was also during this period I married and had a daughter. After teaching in Columbus Public schools for two years I was invited to return to Ohio State as a Graduate Teaching Assistant where I worked in the History of Art Program, becoming a specialist in Islamic Art and the literature of Islamic mysticism. After working on my M.A., I moved to Florida where I taught public School. During this period I completed a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Vermont College of Norwich University. At that time I began a career as a Psychotherapist in public health and private practice settings. At the age of forty-nine I entered the Hillsborough County Law Enforcement academy and upon graduation became a reserve Deputy Sheriff certified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The emphasis in my Private Practice became Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in first responders and veterans. In 2005 I was recruited to SE New Mexico community mental health center where I worked federal and state probation and parole cases. Later I would become the Clinical Director of a local group home for adjudicated youth (males) and eventually would be the founding member of Canyon Sage Healing Arts, a counseling and Mental health Clinic utilizing holistic, mind and body approaches to help people find spiritual and emotional balance and work toward their full potential as individuals as and members of the community. Between 2007 and 2012 I volunteered in Search and Rescue and worked as a volunteer fire fighter. I am a published essayist and poet. I currently live on a small farm in the Chihuahua desert of New Mexico below the Guadalupe Mountains. I have a black Labrador retriever named Cody a small herd of horses, and an assortment of desert wildlife living throughout the farm. The irrigated desert farm has pine trees (40), pecan trees (2), desert willow (5-6), and an assortment of desert shrubs. My great love in life is horses. Although I have ridden horses since childhood, at the age of sixty I decided to improve and refine my riding skills and embarked on learning “three-day eventing,” a type of riding requiring Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country Jumping. I also use my horses to conduct Equine-assisted Psychotherapy as part of Canyon Sage Healing Arts programs. Utilizing horses I help children and adolescents to address issues such as autism spectrum disorder and substance abuse issues. I am currently working on certification as a Professional Therapeutic Horseman with PATH, International. I have four grandchildren who live in Florida. Think Globally - Act locally.
