The hardest question for me to answer is, “Where are you from?” Now, this may seem like an easy question, but it’s complicated. Let me explain. I grew up in sunny southern California and went to the same school for my whole life. My entire family lived within a five-mile radius in Orange County and I was extremely close with them. Then, halfway through seventh grade, my dad accepted a job offer in Singapore and we packed up and moved to the Far East. We lived in Singapore for 3 years and it was one of the best experiences of my entire, young life. I was able to travel all around Asia to countries like China, Thailand, and Vietnam. It opened my eyes to the world outside the small bubble that is Orange County. Soon, I made new friends and with the wonders of modern technology, I was able to stay in touch with everyone back home. Then after my freshman year of high school, my dad took over a new position in Toronto, Canada. I was so excited to make the move here and live in a big city again. Every day in Toronto, I took the subway and street-car to get to school. I still don’t even have my driver’s license because of that, and I’m 19. Toronto was an experience of its own. It opened my eyes to just how multicultural a single city can be. I was able to eat everything from Chinese to Japanese to Mexican food and riding the subway some days, I was even a minority. Now, here I am in Athens, Georgia. Each place I have lived has its own certain characteristics that I love and it’s impossible to choose my favorite spot which is what makes it so hard to answer that seemingly simple question.
