William Chase
Sports, Media Relations and P.R. in Washington, DC
Hey there, I’m William. Media, sports and writing are my passions, and I parlayed that into my an internship with the Augusta GreenJackets, Single-A Affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, in 2016.
It was a blast. I handled the national and local media including interview requests from MiLB.com and MLB Network. I was in charge of running, promoting and managing the teams' social media accounts. I was the voice for the team, meaning I was the direct communication liaison for the front office and team. Anything the manager, coaching staff and players needed, I was their go-to man.
I also took players to/from the airport when they were brought up and sent down.
My role included managing the press box, making sure on game days the script for the PA announcer was in place. The audio was set up, as well as the message board for the scoreboard.
I edited and updated the GreenJackets website with my press releases, stories and featured content. We had a weekly and biweekly newsletter that was sent out, for which I created.
And last but not least, I handled all video creation included for marketing efforts, and I was the teams' in-game photographer. This added to our marketing usage, guest services and POP photos, helping build photo database for future marketing usage of digital and print marketing materials
As much responsibility I had, it really gave me a new look and fresh perspective on how a professional sports team, particularly a minor league baseball team, operates.
It takes a whole team. Whether you're working in the box office, or you're the media, everyone is all-hands-on-deck. This was especially true for tarp-pulls!
I value my time in Augusta as it really helped in being able to lead the charge on so many tasks. Having interned with the Richmond Flying Squirrels, Giants Double-A, in 2013, I knew the sports industry was where I wanted to base my career.
After Richmond I knew I needed to work full-time for a while and resume my sports career pursuits when the opportunity, more so financially, allowed.
I worked at State Farm 2014-15 and then took the plunge in taking a shot at my career goal. Now I am currently looking for a full-time role in Media, Public Relations and Writing.
