William Godwin
Student in Tyrone, GA
Hey everyone, my name is William Godwin and I play the violin. When my sister was in first grade, I went to her school’s talent show because she was performing. But - sorry Sarah - it is not my sisters performance that I remember. That day was the first time I saw someone play the violin; I thought it was beautiful and I wanted to play it too. I asked my mom if I could take lessons and after a while she found a teacher for me and I began to play. I joined a group called the Fayette Fiddlers. I learned to play with the suzuki method; I play by ear. This style of learning has pro’s and con’s but by middle school, I realized I needed to be able to read sheet music. I joined an orchestra called Fortissimo and played there for a couple of years. In highschool I participated in the school orchestra. Instrumental music is beautiful because it is emotional. One cannot always place their finger on what they are feeling, but through music they get a kind of answer. Furthermore, music is like a mathematical masterpiece that gives emotion a structure. Now I still play violin, not because I am the best, but because it is relaxing and I do not know where my life would be without it.
