Wisdom S.
Student and Artist in New York
Hi, my name is Wisdom, and the most interesting this about me is that I grew up in Nigeria. There’s nothing quite like waking up to the sounds of a busy neighborhood, the sun already high in the sky. The mouth-watering smell of food as it permeates the air, the subsequent pleading of the stomach as it beckons you to satiate it, and the sweet satisfaction of the first bite. Life was simple then. The only worries plaguing my mind then were about passing my classes and not getting hit by reckless drivers as I trekked the uneven dirt roads to go to and from my school…normal kids' stuff. Growing up in Nigeria meant growing up bilingual, trilingual, or just understanding languages you don’t remember learning. As a result, I was already fluent in English when I moved to the United States, though I would soon learn that knowing how to read, write, and speak English still was not enough. But that’s a conversation for another time. A positive aspect of growing up surrounded by so much diversity in languages and culture is that it inspired me to keep learning as many languages as I possibly can. Some languages I’ve learned (no comment on if I can still speak them) are Spanish, German, French, and Japanese and I can do a pretty good English accent sometimes.
I like to consider myself a forever learner, and though English has never really been my strongest subject, I’m excited to see what this class can teach me. Also very excited to read Hamlet!!
