Who are you, and what do you do? My name is Wojtek Niemczyk and I’m a Ph.D. student at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun. I study healthcare economics and health sector crossfinancing aspects including public-private partnerships and competition among healthcare providers. At NCU I teach public & corporate finance. For day-to-day operations, like writing papers, data analysis, I use most often my private computer – a 15” Macbook Pro. It’s an all-flash retina model which I bougth quite recently for academic work which I do at my university. I used to work on a classic 21,5” inch iMac but switched to Pro series for it’s mobility. And what software? I use Dropbox for syncing. This is also a place where I can access my docs across all my machines and share selected folders with colleagues. I use Google Calendar for personal and business schedules. And obviously I use my Gmail for mail (especially when on-the-go). To curate my feeds I used to use. For academic paper, which I happen not to write as much as I read, I use both Word (shame there's no Office 365 equivalent for Mac) & iPages and built-in Preview tool. To keep up with the world I make use of Twitter (@wojciechniemczy) (both Mac and iOS ver.), Pocket, Feedly and Instapaper. To effortlessly organize all of my PDF documents and research papers into your own personal digital library I use Mendeley – Reference Manager whilst it has some apparent flaws. Quite recently though I discovered Zotero & Papers 2 for Mac which both turned out to be a powerhorse tool for literally anyone who works in the science field. Favourite apps? My favourite app is most probably Bloomberg for being the most useful for business reasons. For news I’m getting it from Wyborcza app (regretfully not as good as NYT or The Economist for iOS). For handling dozens of passwords, what used to be a huge problem once, I use LastPass and it is 100% awesome. I log to a variety of website on a range of browsing platforms (incl. Safari, Firefox, Chrome Canary Build, Aurora and Nightly) so it’s crucial to have one consistent and always reliable password tool. For purely academic purposes I use Gretl and SPSS for statistical analysis (seldomly Wolfram Alpha), and Atlas TI for coding video or interview data. Recently I begun to use PBWiki for my course wikis.
