The Wells Group was established by myself, Jim Wotkyns, and my partner, John Wells, in 1985. We’ve been located at the corner of 9th Street and Main Avenue in downtown Durango ever since. We’ve expanded by adding offices in Bayfield (1994), the Mountain Resort area (2009), and Tamarron Lodge (2010).

“We Know Durango” best describes our local knowledge of the area and ensures we best meet the needs of our clients’ for residential, commercial, resort, farm and ranch and land. Our firm consistently has close to one-third of the market share in our area and our Brokers collectively sell more properties than any other brokerage in southwest Colorado. As an Owner, who is very involved in our company’s day-to-day operations, I am using my vast experience of our market to actively sell real estate. I know the market well and provide excellent service to buyers and sellers alike.
After all these years, The Wells Group remains the largest independent locally owned, real estate brokerage in the area with over 45 full-time licensed brokers, 12 broker assistants, and a professional management team of 5. My firm contributes generously to a variety of local causes. We take pride in encouraging our Brokers to be involved in various community, charitable, and civic activities as an investment in our community.

After graduating from Colorado State University in 1980, I married my high school sweetheart from Denver and quickly planted roots in Durango to enjoy the lifestyle. I had a stint in the oil and gas business, which has served my real estate career well when dealing with property mineral rights. My wife, Daryl, and I raised our two children here with agriculture and ranching being a big part of our family life, along with training my Border Collie dogs for sheep and cattle competitions. We are active in the family ranch operation and produce hay for our livestock. My knowledge of agriculture and water rights has been invaluable in helping my clients. I am also a commercial and residential landlord, and frequently field questions for clients about those types of investments.

As a commitment to our community, I am a POST-certified peace officer. I serve as a reserve officer for the Durango Police,
