Most people don't quote the movie "Summer School," but I remember well the scene where after getting caught by the instructor, the 18-year-old student/stripper says "If you knew at my age what you do now, wouldn't you do it?"

"Well, I know..."

In high school, in the way back 90's, I was unimpressed by the world of art and careers. Because of that, this African (Zaire, Peace Corps baby) who had spent the majority of his life in front of the TV decided to go out and tackle the world.

What I found is that the world is a hard and expensive place.

But there were pluses...

I ended up becoming a professional server and then bartender. It is still my "career" today. I use quotes because I fell into it, and have enjoyed every minute of it.

Still, since my daughter arrived I have decided it important to use all those pent up faculties to become more than I could have imagined at 18.

I guess I didn't know after all.
