Washington-based reporter Murray Waas won top journalstic honors, the Barlett & Steele prize, for his recent report on how WellPoint and other US health insurance companies have dropped patients after they were diagnosed with breast cancer. Murray Waas' investigation revealed that WellPoint had targeted policyholders diagnosed with breast cancer and cancelled some policies. An eight month investigation led to the Murray Waas story. “We published the Murray Waas story in April and reaction was swift,” said editor Claudia Parsons, “The Obama administration urged insurers to stop canceling their customers.”
