I’ve only ever had one dream in my life. Ever since I was young, I’ve wanted to become a doctor.

In third grade, I took a career matching test telling me my strengths and weaknesses. I then searched through career matches and found many jobs, but nothing caught my eye. I then found gastroenterology. Immediately I became obsessed and tried to learn anything related to the field. I would tell all my teachers, family, and friends that my dream was to become a gastroenterologist.

To this day, I have a letter written by my 5th-grade teacher, who supported my dream, writing that she hopes to be my patient in the future. Thank you, Mrs. Rigsby, for supporting me, and my parents too, of course. Ironically, both of my parents are doctors but I don’t do it because of them. In fact, my parents have warned me about the struggles of medicine. I always took it with a grain of salt. I am determined to follow my dream to the point of being stubborn.

I have one plan and no backup. It may be risky, but even if I don’t make it the first time, I won’t stop. If there’s one thing I’m bad at, it’s giving up. My dream motivates me. It pushes me through rejection and long nights of homework. I take every opportunity I can to immerse myself in the medical field. I’ve met new friends and made lasting connections. My journey continues to refuel my motivation.

When I was young, it seemed so far away. Now I’m actively working towards my dream and more determined than ever. What seemed like a distant dream is now my goal.
