Born a vibrant and healthy I was always a picture of health. While working her way through school as a hair stylist she became very ill. What started out as a swollen eyelid transpired into a 3 year fight for her life? At the height her career she has serviced thousands of people. Still healthy she would notice that every time she did hair she would develop a red rash on her cheeks consistently. On her days off the rash would disappear. She dismissed it. She later noticed that her sinuses would flair up badly every time she would do hair. She dismissed it. During this time she was quite active Teaching aerobic classes several times a week. One day she notices that her left eye lid had swollen up. She dismissed it. But after several week of not returning to normal and getting worse she went to the doctor. Over the course of another several weeks her doctor gave several liquid drops and oral medications to no avail. By this time the eye was swollen and painful which may her eyelid droop? In addition she had begun to notice that her throat glands were also swollen. This continued on for months until finally her doctor referred her to a specialist. The specialist diagnosed her as having lupus and put her on a steroid. The pain subsided and the swelling went down minimally. A life transition caused her to be without medication. The pain and swelling came back with a vengeance. Seeing a new doctor he ran many biopsy of the area. However he could not find any basis of why her body was responding the way it was. It was as if her body was attacking itself by creating a hyper immune response. He diagnosed her as having some type of auto immune disease. She was put on prednisone to be taken for the rest of her life. Sure the eye swelling went slightly down and inflammation went down however other side effects began. In response to the prednisone she had extreme indigestion, weight gain, water weight, joint pain that made it hard to walk and night seizures. The side effects became too unbearable until the doctors finally put her on methotrexate. A medicine designed to decrease your immune system so that it would not hyper respond. This medication would leave her vulnerable to all types of colds, infections and disease. Often she would have extreme joint pain as a result. One day she decided enough is enough.
