2 things that your dogs do that you totaly missed out on.

They can count till 3 or 4. Try showing them three snacks hold them while you throw away the snacks so they can see that you throw them. They'll go after the first one, they'll know exactly where it is. They'll know where the second one is also. Now, for the third one, they'll know it exists, but they won't know where it is, after and if they find it, they'll know there no more snacks for them out there, they saw 3 snacks, they found 3 snacks, so there is no snacks left.

When you try to tell a dog where something is you point at it and look that way, the dog is smart enough to understand where are you pointing, which is, when you think about it, quite complicated.
