Richard D. Young

Teacher in Dallas, Texas

Richard Young, a Dallas native, has vied for his seat on the school board twice, and has what it takes to educate students.

Young's tenure with the public schools dates back to 1999 as a school bus driver, special education teaching assistant, and alternative school director. He has both a Bachelor's Degree in General Studies/Education and a Master's Degree in Education/ESOL, from FHSU in Kansas.

After driving a school bus for the Midlothian I.S.D., Young had actually ran for the MISD School Board. Young's tenure with the Texas public schools continued with the Dallas Independent School District in 2012 as a teacher's aide in an Autism unit, served as a special ed teacher in that same classroom after being promoted, then taught kindergarten. And in 2015, Young received a Master's Degree in Education w/ESOL, earning a 3.8 GPA and meeting the comprehensive exam.

Currently, Young teaches 4th Grade Reading/Language Arts, Writing, and Social Studies and leads the 4th Grade department at Gateway Charter School, a former IR school in Oak Cliff, and is pursuing a doctorate degree in Education with Organizational Leadership through Northcentral University. Young is also completing requirements for his Texas Real Estate license and has started his own Independent Paralegal business.

Young ran in the Dallas ISD 2017 school board election against opponent Trustee Dustin Marshall. Marshall replaced former trustee Mike Morath, who is now Commissioner of Education. Young is a huge supporter of current DISD trustees Bernadette Nutall and Joyce Foreman. Being the first known African-American to run for the Midlothian ISD school board, Young's running for the MISD school board in 2013 prompted the early departure of Deputy Superintendent Robin Bullock, whom he shared a toxic relationship with. Many speculate if Young's running for DISD school board stirred a conflict of interest between himself and his former principal of Foster Elementary, Zachary Hall, whom he too shared a toxic relationship with. Hall is no longer with Dallas schools and has left the country.

Young was part of the NEA class action grievance, challenging the TEI evaluation system which was pronounced all over the media. Young was also part of the NEA focus group May of 2016, which sought to ban suspensions from the lower grades. Young has a strong commitment to excellence, education, and achievement.
