Freelance journalist and Deputy Editor at Thomson Reuters Trading Africa. Based in Johannesburg, but willing to go anywhere for a story I care about. Special interest in health, art, immigration and comedy. I am all about magazine features and literary journalism. Performed stand-up in South Africa and New York, including Amateur Night at the Apollo (see links). I do some photography too.
I have an MSc in Journalism from Columbia University (class of 2012) and have interned at Harper's magazine in New York and Reuters in Johannesburg.
Fluent in English, Hindi and Spanish, working on my Portuguese, Italian, Swahili, Arabic and Zulu. Je ne parle pas francais, unfortunately.
Favorite authors are Kurt Vonnegut and Naguib Mahfouz. Favorite journalists are David Grann and Ernest Hemingway. Favorite comedians are Norm Macdonald, Steven Wright and Alan Davies. Favorite fruit? Mangoes, if you must know.
Long-term goals are to swim with the southern right whales in Patagonia, to keep magazines around forever and to photograph Gaza.
