Yuri Engelhardt

I am passionate about using digital media, data journalism and data visualization for social and environmental causes – especially in areas such as education, health, human rights, sustainability, civil engagement, transparency, and accountability. I love data-driven 'Graphics with a Cause'.

Information graphics and information visualization have been the topics of my academic research and teaching for almost twenty years. At the University of Amsterdam I am part of the New Media group, where we teach, supervise theses, research and visualize what is happening on the web, in journalism, and in mobile / social media.

My specialties: Exploring how the interactive visual exploration of data can be improved. Diagram design. Interfaces. The data society. The Internet. Understanding the 'design space' and the 'building blocks' of data visualizations and the ways in which these can be combined to construct useful, attractive visualizations.

I have had the pleasure of presenting in many countries of the world, sharing the stage with Hans Rosling, Alberto Cairo, Lev Manovich, Manuel Lima, and numerous other visualization experts. Over the years I have learned a lot from my personal face-to-face discussions with inspiring colleagues such as Jacques Bertin, Donald Norman, Dave Gray, Richard Saul Wurman, Jorge Frascara, Nigel Holmes and Stephen Few. My work is quoted by Colin Ware, Stuart Card, Jock Mackinlay, Ben Shneiderman and other key authors in the field of information visualization.

I am teaching and coaching graphic designers, technical developers, media scholars and data journalists, and I am always learning at least as much from them as they are learning from me. (Background photo credit: 31pictures.)
