In college, he received a full ride four-year scholarship at the best long distance running program, Oklahoma State University. Zach was an alternate for the 2010 National Championship team.

Despite all of these accolades; however, Zach's running career took an abrupt end when he received an inoperable injury. Several doctor's confirmed with Zach that he would never run again. He also would never be able to run long distances without pain ever again. Devastated by the news and heartbroken about losing a major part of his identity, Zach turned to hiking and spending time in the outdoors to stay active and healthy. The hobby soon turned into his new passion. He took several trips through Red Rive Gorge, Hawking Hills, and part of the Appalachian trial before visiting Glacier National Park the summer of 2015. At Glacier, Zach formulated the idea of spreading the word of God and raising $50,000 to support colon cancer research while hiking the entire Pacific Coast Trail.
