These are a couple poems I wrote in an attempt to write something clever. The first is more Dr. Seussy, and the second is an Elizabethan sonnet. Notice the turn at like 13.
Sleep Loss
When the sun is setting, and the air gets a chill,
Everyone’s kiddies go to bed against their will.
Parents roll up their sleeves and drop down an octave,
Walking the line between firm and abusive.
Some kiddos have questions; some need a drink,
But not that cup! The one in the sink!
Your patience starts to wane. Their cuteness is fading.
That sing-sing voice you adore gets rather grating,
When all they’re after is an ounce of control,
But the constant pushing is taking its toll.
Just smile that smile that parents all smile.
Be impressed with the strength of their cunning and guile.
Pat them on the head, appropriately firm,
And tie them down tightly, lest they squirm.
A Reality Sonnet from Dad
When I ponder all there is to ponder,
About life in the child bearing years,
My mind is wont to wane and wander
Through thoughts of pathos: love, courage and tears.
Once I needed lifting. I could not stand
Alone. Now, through virtue of my family,
I walk.Where once sat weak and loamy sand
Is stone. A frame has been built sturdily.
I watch from a distance perceived in my mind,
Little boys romping about with their mom,
Living and laughing, leaving doubts behind.
In front, a woman, radiant and calm.
But nothing can prepare a man for the
Sheer volume of poop, of vomit and pee.
Check out the conventions of Elizabethan sonnets. There is a massive amount of structure involved.
