I am a Medical Doctor with a Ph.D. in Ophthalmology, a Professor, a translator and a public speaker.
I was trained and did my research as an Ophthalmologist in some of the world's most famous ophthalmic centers: Intersectoral Research & Technology Complex (IRTC) "Eye Microsurgery" founded by Svyatoslav Fyodorov (Moscow, Russia) and Jan Worst Research Group (Haren, Netherlands).
My research interest is the vitreous body of the eye and its role in the eye function in normal and abnormal conditions. I developed a number of techniques to study the vitreous body and discovered new structures in the vitreous body that are crucial for eye physiology as well as for developing certain vitreo-retinal conditions. The vitreous body is a very complex structure - not just a gel as is generally assumed. Its role in the function of the eye is still to be further clarified.
I am interested in the vitreous body research as well as in sharing my knowledge by doing presentations in medical schools, hospitals and research centers. My unique research findings on the vitreous body are documented in numerous 3D pictures and video films.
Since a young age, I was interested in learning foreign languages and connecting to unique cultures through those languages. I learned English, French, Italian, German, Turkish and Arabic. I translated the play "Shamyl" by Paul Meurice from French into Russian. The play was inspired by the historical events in the 19th century in my native land - Dagestan, a multicultural province of Russia.
In connecting Canadian and Russian cultures, I initiated and became an instrumental part of the project "Hammers and Bells", aiming to translate the poetry of the Canadian author Randy Kohan into Russian and promote it in Russia and North America.
I am also passionate about our World and about the Environment. Recently, I took the Master Composter Recycler Program offered by the City of Edmonton and I am excited to share with others what I learned about sustainability in our city.
Travelling with my children around the world makes us treasure the beauty of nature and motivates us to preserve it for future generations.
