Zurnia Dickerson
Student in Athens, GA
Hello! My name is Zurnia Dickerson. I am majoring in Special Education (Adapted Curriculum) and intend to attend Occupational Therapy school after receiving my master’s degree at UGA. I am incredibly passionate about helping others and always expanding as a learner!
During high school, I was heavily involved in Special Olympics in my community, sparking my interest in learning more about the disability community. I enjoy educating myself on all types of people as it is a way to learn more about how we all experience life differently. It is important to advocate for those who sometimes cannot advocate for themselves.
As I have spent more time learning about different disabilities, I have had an interest in learning ASL. I expect to work with people who have difficulty verbally communicating and I think learning ASL would be very beneficial! So far, I am finding it to be quite fun but a little confusing sometimes.
Throughout my experience studying Special Education, I have learned so much and I only hope to increase my knowledge even more as I continue college. I love learning of the ways the public education system can improve to accommodate everyone and what I can do to further that process in any way.
